Faith In Christ Jesus:
Faith is, first, the character and motives of the Lord Jesus make Him worthy of trust. Second, having confidence in His ability to do just what He says He will do. Finally, taking of your self out of your own keeping and entrusting your self into Jesus’ keeping. 2 Timothy 1:12 is the perfect example of all three aspects of faith: (1) for I know whom I have believed, and (2) am persuaded that he is able to keep that which (3) I have committed unto him against that day. We are studying the Gospel of John, answering these questions: What is revealed of Jesus’ character or characteristics, motives, and abilities? What is indicated that you could confidently commit into Jesus’ keeping?
John 6:14-21, Doubt & Presumption!
Matthew 14:22-33 & Mark 6:45-56
John 6:14-15 records that the multitude of people wanted Jesus to be their Lord and King! Jesus did NOT allow it! Why did He resist that which we teach is necessary?
First, they did not understand WHO Jesus is, “that prophet that should come”. He was a prophet, a representative, but not who Peter later confessed to be The Son Of The Living God! (doubt)
Second, they would have Jesus rule, but only according to their own expectations and allowances! A king may rule your life, but not the hidden thoughts of your heart! (presumption)
In Matt.14:28 Peter said, “Lord, if it be thou,“ (doubt) “bid me come unto thee on the water.” (presumption) We not only want God to prove Himself to us, we want Him to do so on our terms! God must answer our prayers according to our wills rather than to His will.
Later, in John 6:68-69, Peter said, “Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.” For Peter the events and teachings of John Ch. 6 transformed doubt and presumption into faith and hope! (submission)
Mark 6:52 says, “Their heart was hardened” (doubt) because they “considered not the miracle of the loaves.” Presumption always needs more proof! Even while we are amazed beyond measure (Mk.6:51) by God’s faithfulness and ability, we are unwilling to give complete submission to God.
