The New Birth

John 2

23But when He was in Jerusalem during the Passover Feast, many believed in His name [identified themselves with His party] after seeing His signs (wonders, miracles) which He was doing.

Jews of Jesus’ time spoke generally of being born anew as a simile for a proselyte to Judaism.  “New Birth” was, to them, the consequence of joining the Jewish Kingdom.

John 3:3

Jesus declared the New Birth is actual, not simile, and the Kingdom of God is unobtainable without it!  The door of entrance is New Birth, not a New Philosophy or New Loyalty or New Opinion...

"Man may rise to high possibilities - mental, even moral: self-development, self-improvement, self-restrain, submission to a grand idea or higher law, refined moral egotism, aesthetic even moral altruism. But to see the Kingdom of God: ... To see it needs the birth from above; ..."Alfred Edersheim.

Jesus gave three illustrations to explain this “New Birth” which must happen in us.

WATER    “New Covenant”

John 3:5

Ezekiel 36:25-27, John 7:37-39

WIND    “Holy Spirit”

John 3:8

Genesis 2:7, John 20:22, Romans 8:4-5

MOSES’ SERPENT “The Cross”

John 3:14

Numbers 21:8, Romans 6:6-7

What three transformations are birthed in us as indicated by these three illustrations?
