WHY DID JESUS DO THAT?

John 2:13-25

DID YOU KNOW THAT the high priests owned the stalls for the sacrificial animals. The only place Gentiles could worship God in the Temple was the courtyard now filled with merchants and bankers.  The money changers were charging a 25% exchange rate.  According to the historian, Alfred Edersheim, only animals from priest-certified sources could be used.  In fact, priests owned or were investing in many of those sources.  The money exchangers themselves had to pay for the privilege to be in the temple doing business.  Passover was as merchandized as our Christmas, except that the High Priest’s family and friends had a monopoly on business!

What was Passover all about?

Exodus 12 records the first Passover.

v. 5          Your lamb shall be without blemish…

v.6           kill it in the evening.

v. 7          And they shall take of the blood, and strike         [it] on the two side posts and on the upper           door post of the houses, wherein they shall                 eat it.

v. 12        For I will pass through the land of Egypt this        night, and will smite all the firstborn in the          land of Egypt,

v. 13        and when I see the blood, I will pass over            you…

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

We usually, and only, think of Christ’s work on the Cross when we consider His relationship to the Passover.  I find the completion of Christ’s “Passover Work” unfolding in Revelation chapter 5!

v. 12        Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

John Chapter Two

Cleansing the Temple, verses 14-16.

16Then to those who sold the doves He said, Take these things away (out of here)! Make not My Father's house a house of merchandise (a marketplace, a sales shop)!

                1 Corinthians Chapter Six

19Do you not know that your body is the temple (the very sanctuary) of the Holy Spirit Who lives within you, Whom you have received [as a Gift] from God? You are not your own,    20You were bought with a price [purchased with a [b]preciousness and paid for, [c]made His own]. So then, honor God and bring glory to Him in your body.

John 2:17

17And His disciples remembered that it is written [in the Holy Scriptures], Zeal (the fervor of love) for Your house will eat Me up. [I will be consumed with jealousy for the honor of Your house.]

23But when He was in Jerusalem during the Passover Feast, many believed in His name [identified themselves with His party] after seeing His signs (wonders, miracles) which He was doing.
