Faith in Christ Jesus:
2 Timothy 1:12 defines FAITH as knowing the trustworthy character and motives of Jesus, and being confident in His limitless promise-keeping ability, and consequently committing yourself entirely to His keeping. We are studying the Gospel of John, answering these questions: 1) What is revealed of Jesus’ character, motives, and abilities? 2) What is indicated that you could confidently commit to Jesus’?
John 10:1-21 The Shepherd’s Psalm
John 7:1-10:21 occurred all within the week-long Feast of Tabernacles and the one-day Octave which followed it. Luke 11:14-13:17 intervening; John 10:22 - 42, occurred two months later, at the Feast of Dedication of the temple, instituted by the Maccabees.
These verses are the “Psalm 23” of the New Testament. Psalm 120-134 are “Songs of Degrees or of Ascent”, each Psalm building on the previous and reaching to the next. They were sung by pilgrims as they left the world behind and ascended to Jerusalem, and were a prominent aspect of this feast. Our 21 verses begin with thieves and robbers, ascend through The Door and The Shepherd, and end with The Sacrifice!
The FOUR PROGRESSIVE STEPS are:
The Good Shepherd’s Character
He calls us by name (καλεῖ loud invitation, give a name to, to bear the name or title given)
He leads us (ἐξάγει lead out, bring out, fetch)
Puts us forth (ἐκβάλῃ cast out, drive out, send)
2 Corinthians 5:11, 14, 20 Read it!
We know His voice –(οἴδασιν perceive, discern, inspect, examine, regard, cherish, and pay attention to)
John 9:1 “Jesus saw…” same word for “know”
He goes before us – (ἔμπροσθεν “in the sight of, in presence of”) Read Psalm 23 right now!
He gives us life more abundantly (περισσὸν exceeding measure, and superior) two measurements: quantity and quality. Jesus thrusts us out of the sheepfold in order to lead us through life. He guards, guides, directs, provides; and we keep our eyes on Him!
The Good Shepherd’s Power
v. 11 He gives His life for the sheep! (Mark 10:45)
v. 15 He lays down life for the sheep! (1 Timothy 2:6)
v. 17 He takes His life up again! (Philippians 3:7-11)
v. 18 He has power to lay it down and take it again!
